Boracay, Philippines - December, 2024

The whole family went to Boracay, Philippines last December, 2024.

Well, for so long in operation, and we now have the option of selecting Caticlan airport, one that is closer to the beach stations, than many years back and you only have Aklan airport and would need to rravel by bus, then by boat. That would take some hours of bus travel.

So, we did all before the flight. Meaning, we booked our shuttle ride when we booked our flight. And our hotel, Feliz, helped a lot in settling our shuttle bus (or van) rides. Very well organized. Only that on the day we arrived at Caticlan, it was raining. It was raining the weeks before and it was lightly raining when we touched down, then while waiting for our ride, it poured! You can see the sea waves getting higher and higher. That made some of our fellow passengers get to thinking, "Are we going through that?" And thank goodness, no!

So the stalls for the shuttle rides were on the other side of the road, so had to get wet. Once over at the other side, we just mentioned our hotel and name, and the number of people. Like a secret code said out loud for the 5 people inside the stall to hear it, and well, that settle it. We were given our stickers, and were told to put it on a conspicuous spot so we put them below our shoulders. And had to inform the guy wearing the orange shirt - he's our booker.

Our ride came, it was a shared ride, or it would have been more expensive, but the ride is still spacious, of course, as we had to put in all our luggage, and the other party's luggage, too.

Like all hotels, once we arrived, they wouldn't let us carry anything. Well, not used to that, so we picked up the smaller bags and backpacks, where our valuables are kept. Waited for a while at the lobby, then got our rooms.

Feliz Hotel, the Spanish-inspired design, the front doors are gigantic! I estimated the height to be like 3 floors. And the plants were tall. I was joking that our daughters were like elves or dwarfs when they jokingly stood under the tall plants! Well, you know.

Feliz Hotel is in Station 2, and you can go to Station 1 or to Station 3 very quickly. But don't, Enjoy the beach and the people, locals or tourists, and look around, maybe something will catch your attention and decide to buy a souvenir, or something to munch on while taking that stroll.

Very skilled craftsmen, you will find, then you go for the wood keychains where your name, or the name of someone you want to give it to. Less than a minute, the guy said 10 seconds, and did it at that time actually.

Try the food and you will like them. Take your pick. The shirts, or bags, or anything that you like. manicure, pedicure, whatever you see, if you want it, go for it.

Here's the thing. We bought a couple of thousand Philippine pesos but still ran out of cash. No worries! There are many money changers in the island, near the beach, or further out to the roads. And right outside Feliz Hotel is a pair of EuroNet ATMs, where we were able to withdraw more Philippine pesos against our dollar accounts.

Cash settled, we were able to go around more and try more food stalls and restaurants. And I'm not sure, but there seems to be some promotions running during our short vacation in Boracay, like Chow King but this and you get that, buy more and you get more. We like the halu-halo a lot! And then we went to Jollibee, a local food icon all over the Philippines, and is now having 6 branches here in Singapore, our country of residence. Expanding and expanding, spreading the jolly chicken goodness!

We did not get to try banana boat or paragliding, but we enjoyed the sunset cruise. Not spectacular, yet in its simplicity, I will say it is superb! We're not more on sights, but on experience. When we stopped at the place where we can do water activities, we wasted no time to dive, snorkel, kayak. And take alot of photos. BoracayGuide folks also were very helpful, they took a lot of photos, but only posted a few. Well, to their discretion. And, the sunset is mesmeriizing. Out at sea, looking at the setting sun, that's one unforgettable memory.

Would be be coming back to Boracay? You bet! Would be still stay at Feliz Hotel? Definitely! We found out that they have their own firedance show. We got to pick our seat at the front when we learned that in 15 minutes, the firedancers will be starting. You see, we thought only one resturant is having the firedance show, and that's what we watched our first night. But then, like not hearing it right the first time, checked again with one of the hotel personnel, and once we had it confirmed, pick a spot, took our seat! Their performances are different, as well as the number of performers. You gotta be there to see it and enjoy it! Sorry, no videos.

Many more things to say, but let's leave a lot to the imagination, or, your own experience. It was raining on our way to the island and back, and small waves were there during our boar rides. Going in, we were with a couple of fellow tourists, some elderly and some small kids. Everyone was quiet when the boat, picking up speed, was going up and down at first, then higher and higher at it went out to deeper waters and the waves are bigger and more frequent. Our girls suddenly shouted in excitement when a big wave sent the boat unusually high and the sudden drop caused the seawater splashing. That broke the silence! Well, it was actually noisy, but passengers were gripping tight and getting edgy, and with that big wave up and down drop and splash broke the tension.

Then I learned that these boat rides don't stop. I was imagining if it was pitch black and you are out in the same sea. What will it be like to be a passenger? Those who take the Aklan airport, I learned, are those who usually cross the sea around 12 midnight, or the wee hours of the morning, when it is pitch black and you don't see anything but lights at the shore and from other boats. That would be a different experience altogehter.

I'd stop here. Go and have a great time in Boracay. Who knows what or who you will find there.

Till then!

I am almost putting 2014 as the year, everytime...

Before I forget, if going to Japan, make sure that you have a working debit or credit card, one that works in Japan. And for those who shun away from card use, make sure you are carrying USD or JPY.

Train ticket purchase is easily done using JPY bills and coins, and eating in restaurants also by cash, and in some cases, cards - however, do take note that it is reported that cards aren't always recognized.

So when that happens, be sure - have cash - always.

Till then!

03-Jan-2014

This is just to chronicle our family holiday in Osaka, Japan, December 2014.

It is winter, and trees usually drop and lose their leaves. But not all, especially in Japan. Post-autumn leaves still cling mightily to their branches, and the difference colors of orange, red, light green and yellow green - well, they are as refreshing to the sight in the midst of the barren clusters.

And too bad, we didn't get to see the cherry (sakura) blossoms. It is winter!

Minoh (Minoo) Park

Nonetheless, our trek to the mountain of Minoh (Minoo) is worth all the trouble: braving the chilling wind, the steep walk especially after the 1st half of the 45-min walk or so, and the seemingly deserted areas. There are inidividuals and couples you would meet now and then, already returning, and some passing us by, as we took a slow walk to the famous fall at the mountain top, and lots of pictures along the way. The fall was just refreshing, and it was worth all the effort, even though the mountain sides are grey and barren, and the trees just have a brown frame, but still, it was beautiful and rejuvenating. Just make sure you are fit, so you can enjoy the walk up and down. The air is cool and so nice to breathe in! And the sound and splash of water as they hit the surface is just a regenerating tonic.

Umeda Sky Building

We also braved the heights when we went to Umeda Sky Building. That was a structure, but the orchard below it is also a garden of trees having multi-coloured leaves even in winter. And we just walked our way to that attraction.

Osaka Castle Park

Osaka Castle Park is one more place that you get chilled around 2pm onwards. And it was just too bad that at the time we decided to wait for the lights, so we can see how the lighting decoration gives life to the dark night in Osaka Castle, there was a show in another place within the castle area where people flocked and thronged, so the lights were never turned on!

And if you do go there, just be prepared to eat baked or grilled sweet potato.

Nakanoshima Floating Garden

Nakanoshima Floating Garden is another place that we visited, and it was also a walked after getting out of the subway train. The buds are there, and some leftover rose blooms scattered here and there, but if you reach the end, you will see and imagine how it would look like at springtime, summer or autumn. We had it all pictured in our mind!

Getting there

We had our hotel booked about 6 months earlier using Booking.com, and our air tickets were purchased at about the same time using Expedia.com. We searched for the best air tickets and the most reasonable offering we found in Expedia.com.

Hotel - Standard space

The hotel we got was not spacious, but as many did say, that is the standard in Japan for that kind of price range. I would believe that, because if I compare the price to that of Amour Symphony in South Korea, almost the same price, 2 rooms for 3 persons each, including breakfast, we got rooms in SK that is 4x the size! Of course, the bathroom is so spacious that it is also 4x to that compared to what we got in Japan. Since it is the standard for that price range, we contented ourselves, and for good, because comparing the weather, where it is colder, but no snow, the temperature is just so cold, even more when the wind blows. You can feel that when you board a train and the door opens, the draft can get in through your clothes, and you can feel it!

Kansai International Airport

We landed in Japan via Kansai Iternational Airport, and there was one train that goes to our hotel by subway - Airport Express. While the price of train ticket is quite high, we had it all calculated long before our trip date. Sort of saying we were prepared, but then again, whatever preparation you make, nothing prepares you for the real thing!

While we did study the various train lines, we had to rely on the support of personnels at the stations. And majority of the people don't speak English, and since I or any of my family members don't speak Japanese, we deemed it even. Just learn to read the signs and catch the meaningful phrases that goes back and forth, and you should be on your way.

Train Ticket, 24-hour Store, Restaurants

It was 920yen for airport to Tengachaya, and 240yen from Tengachaya to Minami-morimachi. And from there, it was about 5 mins walk to our hotel. And the place we stayed was just at the center of any place you wanted to go, so the small space was justly compensated by the easy transit to and fro different attractions and tourist destinations. Restaurants and 24-hour stores, such as Asnas, Lawson Station and 7-11 (green and red stripe), well, they are all over the places. There is also Kohyo department store, where you can buy various commodities, and Sukiya, if you are so much into ebi. MOS burger, McDonalds, or even KFC, you can find them within the area. There is an eatery that is similar to Yoshinoya, and just like South Korea, you go to the vending machine, slot in your cash, pick you meal and you will be served. Money doesn't change hands. And you are assured that the one preparing your food isn't handling money - just food!

Currency Exchange, International ATM

Hankyu department store is also a station away, and if you need to do currency exchange, or do ATM international, it is just a walk out of Hankyu, into Yodobashi Umeda (B2, B1). Airport Limousine service bus/coach is on the other side of the road, so we did have mobility and convenience.

Airport Express Train vs Express Train

Just be careful. On our way back, we took the wrong train - Express (no Airport). As we took one trip from airport to Tengachaya the day of arrival, we assumed that the Express train we took is also going all the way to the airport. No, it did not. And we ended up in Kyoshi! We were so confident that when we confirmed with the station personell which way to go to airport, and he mentioned platform 3, we just boarded!

It was just good that the Express Train is really on express trip, and you can just feel the speed of the train going. We were delayed for about an hour, but that is still 1 hour earlier to our departure time. And we had to be careful to alight at Izumisano and tranfer to the Airport Express Train. And even when we were sure, we had to confirm with the officer at the platform that we are taking the right train.

One-Stop to Straight Flight Change

Now, our small adventure was actually rewarded, in that when we rushed to the check-in row which is already having a long queue of passengers, we were immeidately approached by two or three airport personnel, asked us about our itinerary, then told us that Vietnam Airlines is delayed, and due to that, we would be transferred to Singapore Airlines. From a one-stop flight (Kansai-Saigon-Singapore) trip, we got a straight flight from Kansai to Changi. Yahoo!

Going again?

I definitely would go back to Japan again, but not on a winter. I cannot miss the sakura blooms and the green or orange trees or the flowers - no, not again. It is just too beautiful not to be seen.

This article may not talk about travel, but it talks about a place which can be a travel destination. I'm just wondering if you would give it a try, either on the water, or on your platter...

BY LIZETTE ALVAREZ

MIAMI – They eat anything, reproduce copiously and adapt effortlessly. And they have become as ubiquitous and pesky as rats- only prettier and more conniving.

Nearly three decades after a lone venomous lionfish was spotted in the ocean near here, the species has invaded the Southern seaboard, staking a claim on Florida, the Gulf Coast, the Caribbean, and even parts of South America. Spreading gradually at first, then frenetically from 2005 onward, lionfish have become the most numerous marine nonnative invasive species in the world, scientists said.

Along the way, the predators, which hail from the Pacific and Indian Oceans and can grow here to 50 centimeters long, are wreaking havoc on delicate reefs and probably further depleting precious snapper and grouper stocks.

There is no stopping them now, salt-water experts said. But hoping to at least slow them, marine biologist and government agencies have been intensifying efforts recently to spearfish them out of certain areas that harbor fragile reefs.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has banned the importation of lionfish and prohibited the breeding of the fish, steps that experts said will focus attention on the problem. The commission also lifted fishing licensing requirements to hunt lionfish and even started an app so that people can report lionfish sightings.

“Eradication is not on the table, but local control has proven to be very effective,” said Lad Akins, special projects director for the Reef Environmental Education Foundation. “They are what many people call a near-perfect invader.”

Lionfish derbies, or rodeos, seem to have the best success rate. Groups of divers gather for a day of spearfishing; recently, 22 divers speared 573 lionfish in one day in the Florida Keys.

There is talk of offering bounties, but money is scarce.

Then there is the gourmet approach. Some Florida restaurants are now buying lionfish, which are light and flaky when cooked. Once there is a large enough market for them, scientists said, fishermen will pay attention and help haul them out of the sea.

“The tricky part is catching them,” said Maia McGuire of the University of Florida. “It’s labor intensive and requires divers, gear and boats.”

Scientists are finding that limiting the number of lionfish on a reef – as opposed to culling them all – will allow the reef and its fish to recover.

Scientists said lionfish wound up in the Atlantic Ocean when people bought them for their aquariums and eventually freed them in the ocean, where they do not pose a problem in their native waters, most likely because they are eaten by more powerful predators that keep the population in check. Here, the predators seemed befuddled by them.

The fish are gluttonous, stuffing 50 to 60 baby fish into their stomachs. Females can each release two million eggs a year.

“They can spawn as frequently as every four days, which is really crazy,” Ms. McGuire said, then wondered,” Are we going to end up with reefs just covered with lionfish?”
